On 16 September 2026, work began on the Restoration, Consolidation and Museumisation of the Nevera Gran de Bèrnia, one of the most remarkable heritage elements in the municipal district of Xaló.
The main objective of the intervention is to recover and consolidate the original architectural structure of this historic snow pit, while also deepening knowledge of its technical aspects and its historical and architectural evolution. The site is officially catalogued as a Local Heritage Site (Bé de Rellevància Local).
An intervention of exceptional technical difficulty
Given the remote location of the site, situated in a difficult-to-access area of the Serra de Bèrnia mountain range, the execution of the works has presented significant logistical challenges. A helicopter provided by the Diputación de Alicante has been required to transport all the necessary materials, tools and equipment to the site.
Funding and promoters
The intervention is promoted and carried out by Xaló Town Council and the MAEX (Museu Arqueològic i Etnològic de Xaló), and funded by the Second Presidency Department of the Generalitat Valenciana, under the grant programme for “Actions to promote the protection, development and promotion of cultural heritage and cultural dynamisation, and the improvement and renovation of municipal assets and spaces in the Comunitat Valenciana”, with a total amount of €100,000.
Timeline and outlook
The estimated completion time is approximately three months. Once the intervention is complete, the Nevera Gran de Bèrnia will benefit from sound structural consolidation and a museumisation proposal that will allow this unique heritage site to be enjoyed and appreciated by both local residents and visitors.

Its heritage value has earned it the official category of Local Heritage Site.
